The Impotent Man

March 10, 2023

Amidst the apostasy era, people with leprosies, lames, crippled and dissembled went to the pool of Bethesda at Jerusalem to be healed. There, the Angel of God comes down once a day and sirs up the pool and the first who stepped into the water after the Angel stirs it, use to be healed. Nearby this pool, was an impotent man who was embedded for 38 years and was unable to enter the pool before anyone else for he would be cured. Nor did he had someone that could help me enter the water.

Then after, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ came by the pool and saw the impotent man and asked him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Lord Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath.” (John 5:7-9)

The impotent man was healed on Sunday being the reason our Holy Orthodox Church named the fourth week of “The Great Lent” by “Metsagu” referring to the impotent man. This Sunday is memorized by the day he was headed and much others like him. so we commemorate it by going to Church and attending the service. The impotent man had also gone to church that Sunday since he was able to walk again. Then he saw Lord Jesus in the temple where he was warned by Him. “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.” Accepting Lord Jesus Christs words, he had left.

Unfortunate to the Jews though for they had not faith in accepting Lord Jesus’s healing. They had confronted the Lord by uttering His own word of not carrying anything of high Wight. The impotent man has carried his bed after he was healed. This was not a sin but a miracle. They had witnessed it but was unable to believe. They had not known who had cured but and was very eager. They had asked the impotent man whom didn’t either now the Lord. so then after he acknowledge it was Him at the temple, he went to the Jews and told them He was cured by our Lord Jesus Christ. (John 5:14)

The Jews were jealous and envied Lord Jesus Christ seeking to kill him. They made defying the law of Sabbath to sue Him. What is more saddening is after his miraculous healing, the impotent man sided the Jews and even slapped Lord Jesus.

Lord Jesus Christ healed the impotent man in His own hands, he negated into turning against him alongside the Jews.

Brethren, we might have embedded by as such as the impotent man, but our harmful and sinful act has trapping us far from our liberty. We might have seen those leprosies, lames and cripple’s in Bethesda also in local churches watering with holy water and felt petty, but though their illness is shoddier tailing cure but Just as Lord Jesus have warned the impotent man, we shall be concerned for the illness of our soul for we have are sick to death.

Therefore, we need to find cure for our soul which is repentance, prayer and fast that cleanses our soul. We shall realize our sickness for we could find medicine for whom is the Holy Communion. We must eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Holy son.

May God have mercy on us, Amen!
