Feast of Archangel Saint Uriel

July 27, 2023

The name of Saint Uriel means “the light of God.” As it is in scripted in the Book of Enoch, he is assigned on thunder, lightning, power and fire. (Enoch 6:2). Prophet David has said, “The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them” (Psalm 34:7) illustrating the support of angels of God in time of sorrow and agony. The angel comforts the people who fear and respect God in time of distress.

Saint Uriel reveals mystery. Even though it is Holy spirit who reveal mystery, it also known that it is the honor of the angels to reveal the hidden truth and to speak in other language. As they do beloved works with this virtue, Saint Uriel also reveals mystery. This is what has been done for Ezra Sutuel.

He has witnessed the angel the cup to drink for he could become wise. “Then opened I my mouth, and, behold, he reached me a full cup, which was full as it were with water, but the color of it was like fire.” (2 Esdras 14:39) Commemorating this miracle, we celebrate feast of the Archangel Saint Uriel on Hamele 22 every year. It is also written in the Book of Enoch about this angel who has revealed to Enoch the mystery of heaven and knowledge. (Enoch 28:13) It was also Saint Uriel who has enlightened the mind of the righteous father Abba Giorgis of Gashicha in scripted in his hagiography. Many Patristic Fathers call Saint Uriel “The Reveler of Mystery.”

It is important to understand what has been done for Ezra Sutuel about the safe guard and honor bestowed from the angels if we are to praise God and live by His command. Ezra has pleaded God for many years. The Lord who does not forget his children send the angel for him. For this, he was unable to know the mystery of the heavens.

This angel was the one who led the way to our Holy Mother Saint Mary whilst her exodus to Egypt with her Baby Jesus. When Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ poured His Holy flesh and Holy blood upon the cross, it was Saint Uriel who has received it in the cup.

May His Intercession be with us, Amen!
