A Gospel narrates life of Lord and Savior Jesus Christ of Nazareth, his teachings and all the miracles He perform. His life is a form of foundations of the Christian faith. Lord Jesus Christ chose four Apostles from the 12; Saint Matthew, Saint Mark, Saint Luke and Saint John, known as the four Evangelists to write his stories in the Holy Bible.
The Four Gospels
According to the Biblical terminology, “the number “Four” is the number represents the earth, because there are four points to earth’s compass, i.e. north, east, south, and west; and there are four seasons to earth’s year, i.e. spring, summer, autumn, and winter. And in the “Parable of the Sower”, our Lord divided the field into four kinds of soil, and later He said, “The field is the world.” How fitting, then, that the Holy Spirit should have given us four Gospels in which to set forth the earthly ministry of the Heavenly One.”
As David says, “You, who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth!” The cherubim are four faced and termed as the living creature. The first one is like a lion, the second like a calf, the third one had a face like a living man and the fourth living creature is like an eagle. (Psalms 80:1, Ezekiel 10:15, Revelation 4:6)
The lion represents Saint Mark; his gospel starts with the roaring sound in wilderness, symbolizing Lord Christ’s effectual working His leadership, and royal power.
Saint Luke is represented with the calf of which his gospel starts with Zacharias the priest illustrating the bloody sacrifices His sacrificial and sacerdotal.
Saint Matthew is represented by the man, in which his gospel starts with Lord Jesus Christ’s genealogy to prove that the son of God has descended from the tribe of Abraham and David; with an evident description of His incarnation to carry our sins and lead to humans to His heavenly kingdom.
Saint John represented by the eagle, stating the divinity of Lord Jesus Christ enrich us from to heaven.
The four evangelists chosen to preach the gospel, travelled to different parts of the world. Saint Matthew preached in Palestine, Persia, Babylon, Ethiopia, and Arabia. But there were also those who embraced Christianity by preaching the gospel. When the governor of that time heard this, he sentenced Saint Matthew to death.
The Apostle Saint Mark also destroyed the worship of Hathor (the god of the cow) in Egypt. Although the prophets Moses and the prophet Jeremiah preached the gospel, the Egyptians were not able to worship God. But in the preaching of the Apostle Mark, they fully accepted Christ. Saint Mark preached not only in Egypt but also in Asia, Rome, North Africa and Alexandria.
Saint Luke preached in Antioch, Rome, and Dalmatia. The Gospel of Saint Luke is called “the Gospel of the Gentiles, the Preacher of the Holy Spirit, the Preacher of Prayer, and the Evangelist.” This is because the Gospel was originally written to the Gentiles. The second title is because His Gospel repeatedly mentions the prayers of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary more than any other Gospel. Thirdly, it is called the “Gospel of the Blessed Virgin”, which speaks extensively about the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint. Elizabeth, the Virgin Mary, the Ninth woman and others.
Saint John taught the gospel in Jerusalem, Antioch, Laodicea, and the cities of Asia, especially Ephesus.
God’s chosen sons, the Saints, the righteous, and the Martyrs of all ages preached the gospel of salvation to the world, converted many to Christianity, and sacrificed their faith and sacrifice for the cause of many.
The gospel is salvation of soul of man and the life of the flesh is in him, and the devil is bound in him; we must believe that Adam was saved from children. It is also written in the Gospel of Saint Mark: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”(Mark 1:15)
Because the Gospel is the story of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we must know and understand all of His incarnation, His birth of the pure, the Blessed Virgin Mary, His suffering at Calvary, and His crucifixion, death, and resurrection. For in all these things he has made the way of salvation. If he is not born, If he had not preached the gospel to the dead, we would not have received forgiveness of sins; Our repentance, our prayers, and our conduct were not acceptable. But through the sufferings of our Lord Jesus Christ we have found a way of salvation, He saved us from eternal death, He died and gave His life for us. Therefore we understand this; We must learn the gospel in order to be saved in Lord Jesus Christ.
